The lights are turned back on for "FNL"

How do you like them apples, Ben Silverman?

OK, so the NBC entertainment head is probably sick of drowning in the sea of footballs fans of "Friday Night Lights" have been sending to studio execs hoping to get the critically acclaimed but low-rated drama back for a third season.

Either way, the fans have won. According to Deadline Hollywood, NBC will partner with DirecTV to renew "Friday Night Lights," despite Silverman's dire prediction that the show's last strike episode would be its series finale.

Please allow me a minute to do my "Dance of Joy."

Now that the moment is over, the question plaguing critics and fans still stands - can we get people to watch?

It's doubtful that the show can continue its course if it continues to pull 6 million viewers or under, but if viewers haven't been bitten by the "FNL" bug yet - what would make them go for it now? I won't go into my groveling pose yet - here's a post I wrote earlier about why you should watch this show. I just can't help but feel that this victory for the fans is bittersweet, that it's merely postponing the inevitable cancellation of one of television's finest shows.

This is great, great news. I love this show so much, and was dreading its demise. I don't care if it comes back for 1 episode or 10 seasons, I'm just glad it's back. It's one of the few shows on television that, in my opinion, captures real emotions. The dynamic between coach and his wife is one of the most realistic portrayals of married life that I have ever seen on TV.

Obviously, I'd much rather see another season, especially with a ton of storylines that have yet to be resolved. But as a fan, I completely agree - I'll take even one more episode.

In a way, I think what David Simon said about "The Wire" (another critically loved but low-rated show) applies to FNL. Maybe it is meant to reach a small audience, that certain kind of fan who appreciates its realism. Either way, great news!

So you have to have DirecTV to watch the third season?

Funny that you mentioned "The Wire." I think less than 2 million people are watching the final season. Imagine if it hadn't been on HBO. It would have ended after three episodes, at most.

Apparently NBC will also air the episodes. I guess DirecTV is sinking money into the operation, though, which is why NBC made the deal.
